SUPPORT WORKER - Gosford

You Connect (YC), formally known as youth connections, is a not-for-profit organisation that supports people living with a disability, have complex behaviours and/or have mental health diagnosis that impact their day-to-day functioning. We are seeking professional Support Workers to join our rapidly expanding team.

About You:

  • Reliable, empathetic and committed to supporting vulnerable people.

  • Relevant industry experience and knowledge; formal qualifications in Disability, Community Services, or similar, would be advantageous

  • A comprehensive understanding of mental health issues and the challenges individuals face.

  • Ability to effectively manage and deescalate heightened behaviours.

  • NDIS Workers Screening Check (or be willing to obtain)

  • Working with Children Check (required for paid employment)

  • Police Check

  • Current First Aid Certificate, HLTAID011 and CPR (or willingness to obtain)

  • Current Australian Drivers Licence and comprehensive car insurance

  • Nightshift (sleepover availability) would be advantageous.

We support people aged 6-40 by providing a range of services in capacity-building supports, community participation, employment readiness, and housing.

We are seeking professional Support Workers to join our fast-growing team to provide support for our clients in our Supported Independent Living (SIL) properties across the Gosford & Newcastle regions.

Your Duties may Include (but not limited to)

  • Personal care (basic)

About You:

  • Relevant industry experience and knowledge

  • We require all our support workers to be reliable, committed, and empathetic individuals to provide quality care

  • Male or Female support worker with experience in dealing with clients with mental health and drugs and alcohol.

  • Ability to manage and deescalate anger outburst, provide guidance and support to manage conflicts.

  • SIL experience is a plus, training can also be provided

  • NDIS Screening check required.

  • Working with Childrens Check

  • Police Check 

  • Valid CPR and First Aid

  • Driving license

  • COVID-19 Vaccination

STEP Volunteer Role Description

About You Connect

You Connect is a not-for-profit organisation that supports people living with a disability across the Central Coast, Newcastle and Hunter regions.

We support people aged 6-40 by providing a range of services, including disability support services, supported accommodation and employment services.

We pride ourselves on being there as and when needed, offering services in capacity-building supports, community participation, employment readiness, and housing.

About the Program

Our School Leavers Employment Supports (SLES) is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to be ready for meaningful work and a pathway to employment.

Known as STEP (School to Employment Program), which is an innovative three day a week program running over two years which equips participants with everything they need to kick-start their careers and achieve their goals. During the two years participants get to experience eight different industries such as media, automotive, hospitality, administration, and construction.

Each of the three days is broken down into job readiness, technical and practical skills. The program is strongly focused on attaining work experience and volunteering opportunities to prepare participants for work.

About the Volunteer Role

The role will assist these participants in the classroom for their Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways on Tuesdays during school terms. The tasks would include:

·         Assisting the Facilitator and support worker

·         Help maximise the particpants learning time by re-directing them with their classwork through their barriers of behaviours and/or disabilities.

·         Help maximise how much the particpants learn by helping them understand their classwork through their barriers of behaviours and/or disabilities.

About the person

This volunteer role will require 2-3 or more years’ experience in the Education or Disability field to be able to understand the participants and how to support them.

·         Willingness to work independently or with professional supervision from the class facilitator and support worker

·         Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation

·         Current Working with Children’s Check

This role might also be for someone who could provide their own field experience and skills to add to the program.

The role could also lead to employment if that’s what the applicant is seeking.
