youthconnections.com.au in strong collaboration and consultation with Aboriginal communities has initiated the Freedom Ride 2011. The journey will re-trace the 2,300km journey made in 1965 through northwest and coastal NSW to improve quality of life for Aboriginal people. We acknowledge the courage of our past, challenge the struggles of today and come together as one mob.

Led into The University
of Sydney by a ten-car convoy, the 2011 Freedom Riders were met with a swarm of
excited Sydney community, friends, family and supporters on Saturday to
celebrate their long awaited return. The 25 participating students arrived home
stronger in themselves and their culture, determined to share with their
communities what they have learnt. The Freedom Riders are in the process of
organising the hand-over of their findings and communities’ views to the
Government appointed panel for constitutional recognition of Indigenous
Australians.

23/2/11 2pm - Moree life
Kevin ‘Gavi’ Duncan was
just 5 years old when the original Freedom Riders came through Moree in 1965.
Charlie Perkins spoke to his father, Kevin Duncan Senior, about life in Moree
as the the first Aboriginal family to build a house off the mission. Now father
and son, two generations of Duncans stand side by side with the Freedom Riders
of 2011.
